Sam Cave is a prize winning young guitarist who studied at the Royal College of Music in London and the University of Southampton.  His recitals, both as a soloist and a chamber musician, have been  met with acclaim by musicians and the press alike. Live on The Late Lute Breakfast Show – 06/02/18, London, UK

At 11am on Tuesday 6th February Sam will be talking about his composition work for period instruments and performing live in the Resonance FM studio with Flauguissimo Duo. You can listen again here.

Theorbo at Kingston University – 14/03/18, Kingston, UK

Johan Lofving will perform Sam’s solo theorbo music as part of a joint lecture to Kingston University’s undergraduate composition students.

Recordings for ‘Focus on Sound’

Sam has recorded two works for a new software project by ‘focus on sound’. The software is designed as an educational tool for younger students in instrument knowledge and recognition and features performances by many exciting young performers. More information here.

Tianjin May Festival – Tianjin, China – 25/05/15-01/06/15

Sam gives a recital, composition lecture and guitar masterclass as part of the May Festival at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music. His recital will feature music by Tristan Murail, Horatiu Radulescu and 2 sonatas by George Holloway, both of which were written for Sam over a 10 year collaboration.

INTIME Symposium 2011 – Coventry, UK – 25/09/11

Together with composer George Holloway, Sam will present a paper at this year’s INTIME Symposium on the compositional and performance aspects of Holloway’s Sonata for Guitar (2009-11). During the talk George will survey the experimental elements of the work whilst illuminating his approach to guitar composition and Sam will speak about preparing the experimental, physical and mental virtuosity presented by this work, preparing premiere performances in more general terms and he will perform the sonata in its entirety. International Composers Collective first USA Concert – Cleveland, Ohio, USA –  16/10/11

On the 16th of October the Collective presents its first concert of chamber music in the USA. Sam’s Dissection of the Angel’s Eye and Easter Music and music by Tim Mauthe, Calogero Panvino and George Holloway will be performed by some of Cleveland’s finest young musicians. International Composers Collective, UK Launch Concert – 25/5/11 

The International Composers Collective is a unique and pioneering organisation. Created in 2010 by Timothy Mauthe (composer, USA), Sam Cave (composer and guitarist, UK) and Calogero Mario Panvino (composer, Australia) to promote, disseminate and create new music around the world, the ICC is a network of composers and performers which covers three continents.

For its inaugural UK concert the Collective presents an intimate, yet thrillingly virtuosic concert of music for guitar and strings containing four world, two European and one UK premiere. Following the sell-out performance at Handel House Museum this concert of new music for harpsichord comes to the Royal College of Music. Sam will perform Mark Wolf’s Hype with Jane Chapman (“Britain’s most progressive harpsichordist” – The Independent on Sunday) while French harpsichordist Marie van Rhijn returns to England to perform Sam’s solo harpsichord work Grace. The original Collective will also perform new pieces for baroque chamber ensemble. SoundSCAPE 2010

From the 14th to the 25th July Sam will be attending the SoundSCAPE festival of contemporary music in Lake Maggiore, Italy. As one of only ten international performers to be invited to the festival Sam will be giving the premiere of Non by the Itallian composer Francesco Maggio and will perform in a guitar trio with Andrew Booth and Ahmet Sonmezler. He will also perform Dark Knights and Holy Fools by Stephen Goss.

The Forge, Camden – 3/09/10

Sam will be performing in a guitar quartet at The Forge in Camden with Alastair Putt, Matthew Robinson and Matt Elliott. The performance includes the world premiere of Alastair Putt’s work Elliptic Filaments, the UK premiere of Judd Greenstein’s Elastic Iridescence.Also on the program is a very special performance of Steve Reich’sElectric Counterpoint which will be performed by live quartet with no pre-recorded parts for the very first time. Refracted Meditations at the Royal College of Music – 24/09/10

On the 24th September Sam’s solo guitar work Refracted Meditationswill be performed by the distinguished Swedish guitarist Johan Lofving, recent winner of the RCM guitar prize. The world premiere recording of this work can be heard on the multimedia page where the piece is also performed by Johan Lofving. This performance takes place in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, Royal College of Music, London and begins at 6pm, tickets are £5.

Mahler 7th Symphony – 17/10/10
Sam makes his St John’s, Smith Square debut with the I Maestri orchestra playing the guitar part in Mahler’s epic seventh symphony. Tickets are £25/£18/£12 (£9 concessions) and are available from the venue website (www.sjss.org.uk)

‘New Music – New Blood’ – 30/10/10

The world premiere of Sam’s new work for solo harpsichord will be performed at this special British Harpsichord Society Weekend concert where up and coming harpsichordists will perform solo and chamber works hot off the score by a new generation of composers. This event is presented by Jane Chapman with composer Duncan MacCleod and takes place at Handel House Museum on October 30th at 2pm

Sam will be giving the inaugural concert of Southampton Classical Guitar Society’s new ‘Young Artist Concert Series’ in Milner Hall, Winchester, Hampshire on the 20th November. Rodrigo with I Maestri – 18/12/10

on the 18th December Sam re-joins I Maestri as soloist to perform Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un Gentilhombre in St Clements, W11. Tickets: £8 conducted by Jean Louis Gosselin – 5pm

 

The (Un)conventional History of the Guitar

On the 14th May Sam will perform a solo recital containing music from over 500 years of the guitar’s history in Brunel University’s Roberts Room. 1pm, free admission.

Cheltenham Music Society

Sam will perform a recital for the members of Cheltenham Music Society on the 25th May in St Andrew’s chuch, Montpellier Street, Cheltenham. His reicital will begin at 8:30pm and will include music by Bach and Smith-Brindle.

 

BBC Radio Performance

Following his recent appearance on BBC Radio Cornwall Sam was invited to return to Martin Bailie’s show on the 25th February at 3:45pm and perform works for solo guitar by Tarrega and Barrios.

Return to the National Gallery

During April and May Sam will perform three times at the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square both as a soloist and with Duo Nuevo (Ruth Corney, flute and Sam Cave, guitar). Dates are April 23rd, May 7th and May 28th all performances start at 6pm and admission is free.

Roots and Flutes at the City Showcase Festival

On the 9th May Sam will give two performances at the City Showcase festival. This groundbreaking and forward thinking festival presents new and emerging artists from a wide variety of musical backgrounds in a variety of venues in and around the iconic O2 in London. In 2010 City Showcase presents “Roots & Flutes” – the first time that the classical traditions of London’s great cultures will be celebrated in one event and will reflect the diversity and heritage of the city and all it has absorbed over the years from traditional takes on classical music to more diverse interpretations from across the globe. The  festival runs from Wednesday 5 may to Sunday 9th May and  Sam will perform two highly varied programmes in informal settings that make the most of the festival atmosphere.

Slug & Lettuce is giving 15% discount for City Showcase wristband holders (deal at O2 tbc).  Sam will be performing in the large ground floor bar area giving an impressive setting for the diverse range of music in his programmes. The festival wristband also gives access to the British Music Experience and the music in there on 9 May (Camilla Kerslake headlining) as well as discounts in Carnaby Street and Regent Street and other bars and restaurants at The O2 and access to festival events from 5-9 May.

Duo Nuevo at Lincolns Inn

Following Sam’s solo recital in 2009, Duo Nuevo will perform a lunchtime recital in this historic Holborn venue.  The performance begins at 1.05pm and will include music by Diabelli, Piazzolla and Tedesco. Admission is Free.

Brunel University

Sam has been appointed visiting tutor of guitar at Brunel University’s Arts Centre and will be running faculty classes for guitar students as well forming and directing a new guitar ensemble. He is also giving a concert with Duo Nuevo (Sam Cave and Ruth Corney) as part of the university’s winter lunchtime concert series (see below).

Refracted Meditations in Norway

On the 15th January the Swedish guitarist Johan Löfving performed the Norwegian premiere of Sam’s solo guitar workRefracted Meditations in a special concert at the Norges musikkhøgskole (Norwegian Academy of Music). The world premiere of this work was also given by Johan Löfving in June 2009 and can be heard on the ‘multimedia’ page.

Cave at the Pump Rooms in Bath

Johan Löfving performed Sam’s 2007 work Refracted Mediations in a concert for the Bath Recital Artists Trust on the 28th March in Bath’s historic Pump Rooms.

Hadisi World Premiere

On the 16th February Duo Nuevo (Ruth Corney, flute and Sam Cave, guitar) will give the world premiere performance of ‘Lullaby for a Deaf Child’ by the Iranian Composer Hossein Hadisi. The performance will take place in St Michael’s Church, Southampton as part of the lunch-time concert series and will begin at 1:15pm, admission is free.

Choral Premiere

Bude Choral Society are to premiere two of Sam’s newest works on the subject of war, these works focus on WWI and set words by Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and others. The concert in on the 21st November at 7.30 in St Michael’s Church, Bude. Addmission is £8.

Sacred Made Real

As part of the National Gallery’s new exhibition of Spanish baroque and renaissance art and sculpture, Sam will perform Spanish music from this period in the gallery’s Sainsbury Wing on the 24th of November at 6:30pm. Amongst the music performed will be works by Gaspar Sanz and Alonso Mudarra. Admission to the exhibition is £8.

Lunchtime at Brunel

Duo Nuevo (Sam Cave and Ruth Corney) perform a Lunchtime concert at Brunel University’s Arts Centre on their Uxbridge campus. This concert will include music by Stephen Dodgson and the premiere of Hossein Hadisi’s new work Lullaby for a Deaf Child. The concert begins at 1pm on the 27th November, admission is free.

National Gallery Friday Lates

On the 5th December Sam will be performing at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square as part of their Friday series of late openings.  6:30pm, free admission.

Leeds Lieder+-3rd October

As part of the festival of contemporary art song held at Leeds College of Music, Sam will be premiering a new work for voice and guitar with the soprano Sarah Barnes on 3rd October. The work is by Canadian composer Steven Nunes and sets text by Lyn Thornton.

Premiere in Cheltenham- 6th October

Appearing as part of Cheltenham Town Hall’s music festival Duo Nuevo (Sam Cave and Ruth Corney) present a concert which includes the world premiere of Sam’s new work Seven Moments for flute and guitar (2007-09).
